Leakproof vs Period Undies: What's Actually the Difference?

If you've ever bought a pair of "leakproof" undies expecting them to work like a pad, then found out the hard way that they don't, you're not the only one. It's one of the most confusing bits of shopping for period gear, because most brands use the words to mean slightly different things.

Here's the short answer. Period undies absorb. They have an absorbent panel built in, so they catch flow on their own. Leakproof undies stop leaks getting through. They have a waterproof barrier, but they're a barrier rather than a sponge, so they're designed to be worn with a pad or as backup. And pad-friendly undies simply hold a pad in place.

Below is how each one works, which one suits which day, and how to mix them so you're covered without the bulk.

Why most brands use "leakproof" and "period underwear" as the same thing

Most period brands sell one type of product and call it both names. Their "leakproof underwear" is period underwear: an absorbent layer on top of a waterproof one, sold by how much it holds. So when you search for leakproof undies, that's usually what you're shown.

We built our range differently. Instead of one pair that tries to do everything, we make undies with different jobs, plus reusable pads you can add when you need more. That means you choose how much absorbency you want and where it comes from, rather than committing to a thick pair on a day you barely need it.

It also means the word "leakproof" means something specific here. On a Pure Snug product it tells you there's a waterproof core. It doesn't tell you the pair will absorb a heavy day on its own, so it's worth reading the next section before you buy.

The three kinds of leak protection we make

1. Period undies: they absorb on their own

Our Period Boxer Briefs (4″) have a full absorbency panel running from front to back, built into the gusset. You wear them like normal undies, with nothing extra.

They're made for lighter days, like the tail end of your period or the sneaky little leaks you don't want to plan around. Because the gusset is attached, they aren't designed to hold a pad as well. If you need more than they give you, that's when the next type comes in.

2. Leakproof undies: a barrier, made to pair with a pad

Our Leakproof Boxer Briefs 2.0 (4″) and Leakproof Biker Briefs (8″) have a full leakproof core that runs from the front waistband to the back and down through the leg panels, with an organic cotton top against your skin. On top of that sits a floating gusset that holds a pad with wings.

So the barrier stops anything getting through to your clothes, and the pad does the absorbing. On their own they're good for spotting, or as backup under a cup or tampon. For anything more, add a pad.

One honest note: because of the extra core, these feel a little firmer than our everyday undies. Most people don't mind on the days they need them, but it's worth knowing so it doesn't surprise you.

3. Pad-friendly undies: they just hold the pad still

Our PadStay range has a floating organic cotton gusset but no leakproof core. It's for anyone who already uses liners or pads and is sick of them shifting halfway through the day. The floating gusset gives winged pads something to wrap around, and it takes liners well too.

Customers who use them this way tend to say the same thing. Cathy wrote that the floating gusset is great for attaching a pad for extra protection, and Sheryl found that the liners she now needs sit beautifully on both the fixed and floating gusset.

How to match your undies to your flow

Think of it as two choices: the undies decide how protected you are, and the pad decides how much you can absorb. Our reusable pads come in three levels. Panty Liners cover spotting and everyday freshness. Day Pads suit light to medium flow. Night Pads are for heavy flow and overnight.

Your day Undies Add a pad?
Spotting, first or last day Period Boxer Briefs No
Backup under a cup or tampon Leakproof Boxer or Biker No
Light to medium flow Leakproof Boxer or Biker Day Pad
Heavy days and overnight Leakproof Boxer or Biker Night Pad
Everyday discharge or freshness Any PadStay style Panty Liner

None of our undies are designed to handle a heavy day on their own. For those, the leakproof core plus a Night Pad is the combination to reach for. Everyone's flow is different, so it's worth trying a new setup at home or overnight first, until you know how it works for you.

Leaks that aren't periods

Leakproof undies aren't only for your period. Plenty of people get the odd bladder leak when they laugh, sneeze, jump or go for a run, and a leakproof pair with a liner or Day Pad makes those moments a lot less stressful. The same setup works for discharge, or just for days when you want to feel extra covered.

They're made for light leaks, not for ongoing incontinence. If leaks are new for you, happening more often or getting worse, it's worth a chat with your GP or a pelvic floor physio. This is general information, not medical advice.

Why leg length matters for leaks

This is the part most period undies skip. A lot of period briefs are cut high on the leg, which leaves very little coverage at the back and around the legs, and that's exactly where leaks tend to escape when you're sitting for a long time or lying down.

Our period and leakproof styles come in a 4″ boxer and an 8″ biker. The longer leg keeps more coverage where you need it, with the leakproof panels running down into the leg. Your thighs don't rub together either, which matters more than you'd think on a hot day. They come in sizes XS to 5XL, so you don't have to size down your comfort to find a pair that fits.

Lynne, who wears the 8″ biker, put it simply: she also got the winged pads, found them very comfortable, and said there's no rubbing like liners from the supermarket.

What they're made of

The body of every pair is our soft, breathable modal, the same fabric as our everyday undies. The leakproof core has an organic cotton top layer against your skin, and the floating gussets are organic cotton too. The range is PFAS-free.

Our reusable pads have three layers: 100% organic cotton on top, an absorbent terry core in the middle, and a leakproof layer on the bottom. The pad fabric is OEKO-TEX certified.

Looking after them

Give them a rinse in cold water first until it runs clear, then cold machine wash in a laundry bag. Air dry recommended. If air drying isn't practical, tumble dry on low heat. Don't use bleach, and skip the fabric softener, since it can coat the fabric. Our full guide to washing period undies goes through it step by step.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between leakproof and period underwear?

Period underwear has an absorbent panel built in, so it catches flow on its own. Leakproof underwear has a waterproof barrier that stops leaks reaching your clothes, but it doesn't absorb much, so it's designed to be worn with a pad or as backup.

Can you wear leakproof undies without a pad?

Yes, for spotting or as backup under a cup or tampon. For anything more than that, add a pad. The leakproof core stops leaks getting through, and the pad does the absorbing.

Are leakproof undies good for bladder leaks?

For light bladder leaks, like the odd leak when you laugh or sneeze, a leakproof pair with a liner or Day Pad works well. They aren't designed for ongoing incontinence. If leaks are new or getting worse, talk to your GP or a pelvic floor physio.

Can I wear period undies overnight?

None of our undies are designed for heavy flow or overnight on their own. For nights and heavy days, wear Leakproof Boxer Briefs or Biker Briefs with a Night Pad in the floating gusset.

Do leakproof undies feel different to normal undies?

A little. The leakproof core makes them slightly firmer than our everyday styles. They're still soft modal on the outside with organic cotton against your skin.

What sizes do they come in?

Our women's period and leakproof range comes in XS to 5XL, in a 4″ boxer and an 8″ high-waisted biker.
